Grid systems to graphics, a jumble of assets, a sticker here, a pattern there, wonderful clashing, endless combinations, a comprehensive toolkit, permanent, interactive scrapbook aesthetics.
The Turner group approached Art&Graft with a crazy idea for a rebrand – they wanted a complete design overhaul for Boing, as if it had been created by kids. The children’s channel, broadcasting across Italy, France and Spain, is home to beloved IPs from Ben 10 to the Powerpuff Girls.
The Boing team wanted the channel to speak in the language of its young viewers. To underpin the craziness, the Art&Graft team pitched a modular design system with a selection of stickers, delivering an initial package of over 150 different for launch. Each output of the toolkit had the functionality to switch out stickers, allowing the channel to create an almost infinite series of bumpers, idents and menus.
A pulsing motion language was also developed for the stickers, a logo ‘ignition’ that gives the viewer a glimpse of the chaotic energy contained within.
"We really liked the idea of having a kids channel that felt like it was designed by kids — mad and chaotic yet underpinned by a really solid design system. What we created was a channel that could evolve over time (with plenty of involvement from the kids)."Mike Moloney, Executive Creative Director at Art&Graft
Due to the crazy, clashing, interchangeable nature of the deliverables, it was imperative to develop a solid framework for the channel design. Art&Graft developed the toolkit in a strict grid system- this meant that bumpers and idents could be constantly updated by switching out deliverables, creating endless surprises for the children.
